St. Patrick’s College staff believe that good literacy practice embedded across the curriculum will support pupil learning and raise standards at all key stages.
Our vision is to raise standards of literacy of all students, so that they develop the ability to use their literacy skills effectively in all areas of the curriculum and the skills necessary to cope with the demands of further education, employment and adult life.
We provide one-to-one and small group literacy support with our Literacy Assistant, Mrs P McGarrity. Our goal is to help each pupil work towards fulfilling their potential.
Specific Literacy programmes that we deliver include Reading Partnership, Write Away Together and Talking Partners as well as language support for EAL Newcomer pupils.
Paired Reading Programme – Post 16 Literacy mentors complete a paired reading programme with selected students. Each Literacy mentor completes a reading record with each student and the student’s reading age is tested again at the end of the four week programme.
Year 8 Literacy Support Pack – Students in Year 8 are given a Literacy Support pack at the beginning of the academic year to help build literacy skills across the curriculum.
Our KS3 students have the opportunity to become Library prefects and our school Librarian, Mr C Coyle delivers Literacy activities and events throughout the school year.
