The Nurture Programme

The Nurture Programme

St Patrick’s College, have developed a Nurture area, which enables access to support and nurturing strategies for students who may require support within the areas of managing emotions, building self-worth, resilience and social skills. The Nurture area is staffed by our Nurture lead, Miss Hannah Campbell, who is supported by Miss Caoimhe Skeffington. Along with ‘Hope’ our Therapy Dog, they ensure that identified students are supported to manage school and progress, so that they can achieve their full potential.

In the Nurture Room students share breakfast together, enjoy activities to promote social skill development, self-regulation and positive thinking. We know that being ready to learn requires much more than just resources and equipment. Pupils need to feel motivated and free from other worries and concerns they may carry. Some students will need help relating their emotions and others require support in building their confidence and emotional wellbeing. This area is invaluable in supporting and nurturing the whole child.

Within St Patrick’s College we have adapted the 6 Principles of Nurture;

  • Children’s learning is understood developmentally
  • The classroom offers a safe base
  • The importance of nurture for the development of wellbeing
  • Language is a vital means of communication
  • Behaviour is communication
  • The importance of transitions in children’s lives

We are currently completing the National Nurturing Schools UK Programme.
