Introduction

Welcome to the Technology & Design department.

Technology Department

From the outset, at the beginning of each academic year, students will be given an overview of their learning intentions for the year. Shorter term learning intentions will be outlined at the beginning of each term, and, on a more immediate basis, at the beginning of each lesson.

A clear explanation will be given to students on how to approach tasks given to them and guidance and support will be provided if they encounter problems in their assignments.

Teachers will draw from a range of visual aids and models held by the department or from those developed by individual teachers. Students will be involved in a wide range of learning activities within and across the four attainment targets: – designing, communication, manufacture and energy and control.

Learning will be undertaken on a whole class basis, in pairs or groups and on an individual basis. The main aim of the Key stages 3 & 4 approach is to move away from a dependence on the teacher towards a more independent and self-directed learning.

Department Aims

To develop imaginative thinking in children and to enable them to talk about what they like and dislike when designing and making;
To encourage child to discover how things work, and draw and model their ideas;
To develop an understanding of technological processes, products, their manufacture and their contribution to our society
To encourage children to select appropriate tools and techniques for making products, whilst following safe procedures
To explore attitudes towards the world of work
To foster enjoyment, satisfaction and purpose in designing and making
