Literacy Staff

Literacy Coordinator: Mrs K Kelly

At St Patrick’s College, we believe that high-quality literacy practice embedded across the curriculum is fundamental to supporting pupil learning and raising attainment at all key stages. Our vision is to strengthen the literacy and oracy skills of every student, enabling them to communicate confidently, access all areas of the curriculum effectively, and develop the competencies required for further education, employment, and adult life.

We are committed to fostering a culture of confidence in all aspects of literacy. Throughout the year, we plan a range of engaging oracy activities for each year group—such as the Year 8 Murder Mystery event and the Year 10 An Inspector Calls Mock Trial—to help students develop their speaking, listening, and critical-thinking skills in meaningful and enjoyable ways.

Targeted support is also available through one-to-one and small-group sessions delivered by our Literacy Assistant, Miss Lauren Boyd. Through this provision, we aim to ensure that every student is supported in working towards fulfilling their full potential.

Literacy events in St Patrick’s College:

Paired Reading Programme – Post 16 Literacy mentors complete a paired reading programme with selected students. Each Literacy mentor completes a reading record with each student and the student’s reading age is tested again at the end of the four week programme.

One to One Support: Miss Turbitt works with identified students to develop their literacy and oracy across the curriculum.

Literacy Lunch: Students can attend a Literacy Lunch every week where we collectively read novels, play literacy based games and work on making progress together.

Literacy Lounge: Post 16 plan events in our Literacy Lounge where students can attend poetry readings, book clubs and other literacy based events.

Literacy Prefect: Our Literacy Prefect works closely alongside Post 16 and Mrs Kelly to plan Literacy events each term to raise the profile of Literacy across the curriculum.

Public Speaking Competition: Our annual Public Speaking competition encourages confidence in Oracy and allows our students to express themselves.

Debate Club: We have a weekly debate club for all year groups where students can discuss and debate topics that are relevant to them, improving their oracy skills along the way!
